Much of the stone was imported from Caen in Normandy to give dignity as well as
strength to the great edifice, which was originally kept whitewashed to intensify its overwhelming effect. Rising 30 metres high, the mighty Tower must have completely dominated the lowly buildings of late-Saxon London.
